Your cameras are working. But are they secure?
CISA and the FBI have warned about known vulnerabilities in Hikvision, Dahua and generic IP cameras. If your system hasn't been updated since install, someone could watch your feed, disable recording, or use a camera as a doorway into your network — often with no password.

How many security cameras do I need?
Most homes are well covered with 4–8 cameras at the entry doors, driveway, and main interior areas. Businesses usually need every public and employee entrance, the register or point of sale, parking areas, and any storage or cash-handling zone. Where should I place security cameras?
Cover entry points first — front door, back door, garage, employee entrance — at a height that captures faces, not the tops of heads. Add driveway, parking and loading angles for context and plates. Don't aim straight into bright doors, windows, or headlights without a night test. Our free Blind Spot Checker walks each area.
Are the tools really free?
Yes — the planner, blind-spot checker, storage and PoE calculators, and printable checklists are free with no signup. They help you plan and learn. If you want the plan finished, installed, or reviewed on-site, that's where Hi-Tech comes in.
Wired PoE or Wi-Fi cameras — which is better?
Wired PoE is more reliable for anything that matters: steady power, no dropped signal, and one cable for data and power. Wi-Fi cameras are fine for light-duty spots with a strong signal, but walls, distance, and interference cause dropouts. Use the Wi-Fi Reliability Check to see which spots are risky.
Can my existing cameras be hacked?
Older IP cameras and NVRs with default passwords or outdated firmware can be vulnerable — CISA and the FBI have issued alerts. Our Camera Security Audit scans for default credentials, exposed ports, and known CVEs, then hardens what it finds. Most systems have never been updated since install.
