Three different pipes matter: camera→switch (each stream), switch→NVR uplink (all streams at once — make it gigabit), and internet upload (only for remote viewing). Scene motion and bitrate settings shift real numbers.
The three bottlenecks
The uplink
Every camera stream crosses the switch→NVR link at once. 16 × 4MP on H.264 ≈ 112 Mbps — a 100 Mbps uplink drops frames.
Internet upload
Remote viewing rides your upload, not download. Two 4K main-streams can flatten a 20 Mbps upload plan.
Wi-Fi cameras

Bandwidth questions
How much bandwidth per camera?
4MP on H.265 at 20 fps ≈ 2–4 Mbps; H.264 roughly doubles it; 4K runs 8–16 Mbps on H.264 or 4–8 on H.265.
Does recording use my internet?
No — local NVR recording stays on your LAN. Internet upload only matters when you view remotely.
Why is remote viewing choppy?
Your upload speed likely can't carry the streams. View substreams, lower bitrate, use H.265, or upgrade the upload plan.
Do I need gigabit?
Per-camera ports are fine at 100 Mbps; the switch→NVR uplink should be gigabit above ~8–10 cameras.
